While he was in Bethany in the home of Simon the leper,
they made a dinner for him there;
Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those dining with him.

As he was sitting,
Mary took a pound of expensive genuine nard perfume
and breaking the alabaster flask
she poured it on his head and anointed the feet of Jesus
and wiped off his feet with her hair;
and the house was filled with the odor of the perfume.

Some of the disciples seeing
were angry saying to themselves,
"Why has this waste of the perfume happened?"

Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples,
who was about to give him over, said,
"Why was this perfume not sold
for three hundred days' wages
and given to the poor?"
He said this not because he cared about the poor,
but because he was a thief
and having the money box
he used to lift what was put into it.

But Jesus said, "Let her go; why are you bothering her?
She did a beautiful thing for me;
for you have the poor with you all the time,
and whenever you wish, you can do good for them;
but me you do not have all the time.
What she had she did;
beforehand she has anointed my body for burial.
Amen, I tell you,
wherever this good message is preached in the whole world,
what she did will also be spoken in memory of her."

So a large crowd of Jews became aware that he was there,
and they came not because of Jesus alone,
but so that they might also see Lazarus
whom he raised from the dead.
The high priests decided that they should kill Lazarus too,
because many of the Jews went because of him
and believed in Jesus.

Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve,
going to the high priests
said, "What are you willing to give me,
if I give him over to you?"

Hearing they were glad
and promised to give him thirty silver coins.
He consented,
and from then on he looked for an opportunity
to give him over to them apart from the crowd.
