Jesus went out into the villages of Caesarea Philippi,
and on the way he questioned his disciples,
"Who do people say I am?"

They answered, "Some John the Baptist,
and others Elijah, and others Jeremiah
or that one of the ancient prophets rose up."

He said to them, "But who do you say I am?"

Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ,
the son of the living God."

Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjonah,
because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you
but my Father in heaven.
I also tell you that you are Peter,
and on this rock I shall build my church,
and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.

"I shall give you the keys of the sovereignty of heaven,
and whatever you bind on the earth
will be bound in heaven,
and whatever you release on the earth
will be released in heaven."

Then he warned them
that they should tell no one that he is the Christ.

From then on Jesus began to teach his disciples
that the human son must go away into Jerusalem
and suffer many things,
and be rejected by the elders and high priests and scholars
and be killed and on the third day be raised.
He spoke the word frankly.

Taking him aside Peter began to reprimand him
saying, "God help you, Lord! This shall not be."

But turning and looking at his disciples
he reprimanded Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan;
you are a temptation to me,
for you do not think of God's things but of humans'."

Then Jesus said to his disciples,
"If anyone wishes to come after me,
let one deny oneself and take up one's cross, and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save one's life, will lose it;
and whoever loses one's life on account of me, will save it.
For what does it benefit a person
to gain the whole world and damage one's soul?
For what could a person give in exchange for one's soul?

"For whoever is ashamed of me and my words
in this adulterous and sinful generation,
the human son will also be ashamed of the same
when he comes in the glory of his Father
with the holy angels;
then he will give back to each according to one's action.
Amen, I tell you
that some who are standing here may not taste death
until they see the sovereignty of God has come with power."
