Pharisees and scholars coming from Jerusalem
were gathering by him,
and they saw some of his disciples
eating bread with unwashed hands,---
for the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat
unless they wash their hands first,
holding to the tradition of the elders;
they do not eat from markets unless they rinse;
and they hold to many other things which they received,
washing of cups and pitchers and copper pots,---
and the Pharisees and the scholars questioned him,
"Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders?
For they do not wash their hands whenever they eat bread."

He answered them, "And why do you
break the commandment of God because of your tradition?
For Moses said, 'Honor your father and mother,'
and 'Let whoever speaks evil of his father or mother
be put to death.'

"But you say, 'A person may say to his father or mother:
"Whatever you might have been benefited from me is a gift,"'
and you no longer let one
do anything for one's father or mother,
nullifying the word of God
by your tradition which you have received;
and you do many such similar things.

"Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied well about you,
as it has been written:

This people honors me with the lips,
but their heart is far away from me;
and in vain they worship me,
teaching as teachings the commands of people.

Letting go of the commandment of God
you hold to the tradition of people."

Calling to the crowd he said,
"Everyone listen to me and understand.
There is nothing outside of a person
which entering into one's mouth can defile one;
but what comes out from the mouth, this defiles a person."

When he went into the house away from the crowd,
his disciples said to him, "Do you know that
the Pharisees who heard the word were offended?"

He answered, "Every plant that
my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted.
Let them go; they are blind guides of the blind;
and if the blind guide the blind,
they will both fall into a ditch."

Peter said to him, "Explain to us the parable."

He said, "Are you also so unintelligent?
Do you not understand that everything outside
entering into a person's mouth cannot defile one,
because it does not enter into one's heart,
but it goes into the stomach
and is thrown out into a latrine, thus purifying all foods?

The thing coming out of the mouth
is what defiles the person.
For from within come out
the bad thoughts from the heart of people:
murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts,
false testimonies, greeds, malice, deceit,
lewdness, an evil eye, slander, arrogance, foolishness;
all these evils come out from within and defile a person,
but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a person."

After these things Jesus walked in Galilee;
for he did not wish to walk in Judea,
because the Jews were trying to kill him.
