He had to pass through Samaria.
So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar,
near the place which Jacob gave to his son Joseph;
and there was Jacob's well.
So Jesus, tired from the journey, sat thus at the well;
it was about the sixth hour.

A woman from Samaria came to draw water.
Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink."
For his disciples had gone away into the town to buy food.

So the Samaritan woman said to him,
"How is it that you, a Jew,
ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?"
(For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God,
and who it is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,'
you would have asked him,
and he would have given you living water."

She said to him, "Lord, you have no bucket,
and the well is deep;
where then do you have living water?
Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well,
and drank from it himself with his sons and his cattle?"

Jesus answered her,
"Everyone who drinks from this water will thirst again,
but whoever drinks from the water which I will give one,
will never thirst,
but the water which I will give one will become in one
a fountain of water springing up to eternal life."

The woman said to him, "Lord, give me this water,
so that I may not thirst nor come through here to draw water.

He said to her, "Go call your husband and come here."

The woman answered, "I have no husband."

Jesus said to her, "You say correctly, 'I have no husband;'
for you have had five husbands,
and now the one you have is not your husband;
this you have said truly."

The woman said to him, "Lord,
I see that you are a prophet.
Our fathers worshipped on this mountain,
and you say that in Jerusalem
is the place where one must worship."

Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman,
that the hour is coming
when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem
will you worship the Father.
You worship what you do not know;
we worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews;
however, the hour is coming and now is,
when the true worshipers
will worship the Father in spirit and truth;
for the Father seeks such worshipers of him;
God is spirit,
and those worshipping must worship in spirit and truth."

The woman said to him,
"I know that Messiah is coming (the one called Christ);
when that one comes, he will announce everything to us."

Jesus said to her, "I am the one, who is speaking to you."

Upon this his disciples came,
and they were surprised that he was speaking with a woman;
though no one said, "What do you want?"
or "Why do you speak with her?"

So the woman left her water jar
and went away into the town,
and she said to people,
"Come see a person who told me all I ever did;
is this not the Christ?"
They went out of the town and came to him.

In the meantime the disciples said to him, "Rabbi, eat."

But he said to them, "I have food to eat
which you do not know about."

Therefore the disciples asked each other,
"Has anyone brought him something to eat?"

Jesus said to them, "My food is that I may do the will
of the one who sent me and complete this work.
Do you not say that
there is still four months, and the harvest comes?
Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes and see the fields,
because they are white for the harvest.
Already the reaper receives pay
and gathers fruit for eternal life,
so that the sower and the reaper may rejoice together.
For in this the word is true
that one is the sower and another the reaper.
I send you to reap what you have not labored over;
others have labored, and you have entered into their labor."

Out of that town many of the Samaritans believed in him
because of the word of the woman's testimony,
"He told me everything I did."
Therefore when the Samaritans came to him,
they asked him to stay with them;
and he stayed there two days.

And many more believed because of his word;
to the woman they said,
"We no longer believe because of your talk;
for we ourselves have heard,
and we know that this is truly the savior of the world."

After two days he went out from there into Galilee.
