"I am the true vine, and my Father is
the farmer.
Every branch in me not bearing fruit, he removes it,
and every branch bearing fruit,
he cleans so that it may bear more fruit.
You are already clean because of the word
which I have spoken to you;
remain in me, and I in you.
As the branch cannot bear fruit from itself
unless it remains on the vine,
so neither can you unless you remain in me.
"I am the vine, you the branches.
The one remaining in me and I in him,
this one bears much fruit,
for without me you cannot do anything.
If someone does not remain in me,
one is thrown out like the branch and dried out,
and they gather them and throw them into the fire,
and they are burned.
If you remain in me and my sayings remain in you,
ask for whatever you wish, and it will happen to you.
By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit
and you will be my disciples.
"As the Father loved me, I also loved you;
remain in my love.
If you will keep my commandments,
you will remain in my love,
as I have kept my Father's commandments
and I remain in his love.
These things I have spoken to you
so that my joy may be in you
and your joy may be fulfilled.
This is my commandment,
that you love each other as I loved you.
"No one has greater love than the one,
who lays down one's life on behalf of one's friends.
You are my friends, if you do what I command you.
I no longer call you servants,
for the servant does not know what his lord does;
but I have called you friends,
because everything I heard from my Father
I made known to you.
You did not select me, but I selected you,
and I have appointed you so that you may go and bear fruit
and your fruit may remain,
that whatever you ask the Father for in my name
he may give you.
"This I command you, that you love each other.
If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before you.
If you were from the world,
the world would have loved its own;
but you are not from the world,
because I selected you out of the world;
for this reason the world hates you.
"Remember the word which I told you:
a servant is not greater than his lord.
If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you;
if they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
But they will do all these things to you because of my name,
for they do not know who sent me.
If I had not come and spoken to them,
they would not have sin;
but now they have no excuse for their sin.
Whoever hates me also hates my Father.
If I had not done works among them
which no other person did,
they would not have sin,
but now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father.
But it is so that the word
written in their law may be fulfilled:
They hated me without reason.
"When the intermediary comes
whom I will send to you from the Father,
the spirit of truth which proceeds out from the Father,
that one will testify about me;
and you also will testify,
because you have been with me from the beginning.
