Thomas 91

And as he was speaking,
a Pharisee asks him to dine with him;
and entering he sat down.
But the Pharisee seeing was surprised
that he did not first wash before dinner.

And the Lord said to him,
"Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish,
but the inside of you is full of greed and corruption.
Did not the one who made the outside also make the inside?
Yet give the inner things as charity,
and look, everything is clean for you.

"But woe to you Pharisees,
because you tithe the mint and the rue and every herb,
and pass by justice and the love of God;
and these are necessary to do, not passing by those either.

"Woe to you Pharisees,
because you love the best seat in the synagogues
and the greetings in the marketplaces.

"Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves,
and the people walking over do not know it."
Luke 11:37-44

Jesus said, "Why do you wash the outside of the cup?
Are you not aware that
he who made the inside also made the outside?"
Thomas 89

Jesus said, "Woe to the Pharisees,
for they are like a dog sleeping in the manger of the oxen;
neither does he eat nor does he let the oxen eat."
Thomas 102

And one of the lawyers answering says to him,
"Teacher, by saying these things you insult us also."

And he said, "Woe to you lawyers also,
because you burden people with loads hard to bear,
and you yourselves will not touch the burdens
with one of your fingers.

Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets,
and your fathers killed them.
Thus you are witnesses and approve of your fathers' deeds,
for they killed them, and you build their tombs.

"For this reason also the wisdom of God said,
'I will send to them prophets and apostles,
and some of them they will kill and persecute,'
so that the blood of all the prophets
shed from the foundation of the world
may be accountable from this generation,
from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zacharias
who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary;
yes, I tell you, it will be accountable from this generation.

"Woe to you lawyers, because you took the key of knowledge;
you yourselves did not enter,
and you hindered the ones entering."

And as he went out from there,
the scholars and the Pharisees began to be terribly hostile
and to interrogate him about numerous things,
lying in wait for him to catch something from his mouth.
Luke 11:45-54

Jesus said, "The Pharisees and the scholars
received the keys of knowledge;
they hid them and did not enter in,
nor did they let those who wished enter.
But you, become wise as serpents and innocent as doves."
Thomas 39

While a crowd of thousands was gathering,
stepping on each other,
he began to say to his disciples first,
"Beware yourselves of the yeast of the Pharisees,
which is hypocrisy.
And there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed,
nor hidden that will not be known.

"Therefore whatever you said in the dark
will be heard in the light,
and what you whispered to the ear in the secret room
will be proclaimed on the housetops.

"And I tell you, my friends,
do not be afraid of those killing the body
and after that not having anything more they can do.
But I will show you whom you should fear:
fear the one who after the killing
has authority to throw you into hell.
Yes, I tell you, fear this one.

"Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?
Yet not one of them is forgotten before God.
But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.
Do not be afraid;
you are worth more than many sparrows.

"And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before people,
the human son will also acknowledge one
before the angels of God;
but the one denying me before people
will be denied before the angels of God.

"And everyone who says a word against the human son,
it will be forgiven one;
but to the one blaspheming against the Holy Spirit
it will not be forgiven.

"And when they bring you in
before synagogues and rulers and authorities,
do not worry about how you should defend yourself
or what you should say;
for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that hour
what is necessary to say."

And someone from the crowd said to him, "Teacher,
tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."

But he said to him, "Human,
who appointed me a judge or divider over you?"
Luke 12:1-14

Someone said to him, "Tell my brothers
to divide my father's possessions with me."

He said to him, "O man, who made me a divider?"
He turned to his disciples and said to them,
"I am not a divider, am I?"
Thomas 72

And he said to them, "See that you guard against every greed,
for a person's life does not consist
of the abundance of one's possessions."

And he told to them a parable saying,
"The land of a certain wealthy person yielded well.
And he reasoned within himself saying, 'What should I do?
for I have nowhere I may store my fruit.'

"And he said, 'I will do this:
I will tear down my barns and build larger ones,
and there I will store all my grain and goods,
and I will say to my soul,
"Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years;
rest, eat, drink, be merry."'

"But God said to him, 'Fool,
this night they demand back your soul from you;
and the things you prepared, whose will they be?'
Thus is the one treasuring for himself,
and not being wealthy in God."
Luke 12:15-21

Jesus said, "There was a wealthy man who had much money.
He said, 'I will use money
so that I may sow and reap and plant
and fill my storehouse with fruit,
so that I will not need anything.'
This was what he thought in his heart.
And that night he died.
Whoever has ears let him hear."
Thomas 63

"Fear not, little flock;
for your Father is pleased to give you the sovereignty.
Sell your possessions and give charity;
make yourselves purses that do not get old,
inexhaustible treasure in heaven,
where a thief does not come near nor does a moth destroy;
for where your treasure is, there also will be your heart."
Luke 12:32-34

"If you do not fast from the world,
you will not find the sovereignty;
if you do not keep the Sabbath as Sabbath,
you will not see the Father."
Thomas 27

"Let your loins be girded and your lamps be burning;
and be like people waiting for their lord
to return from the wedding,
so that when he comes and knocks
they may immediately open to him.

"Blessed are those servants,
whom the lord will find awake when he comes;
amen, I tell you that he will gird himself
and invite them to dine and coming by he will serve them.
And if he comes in the second or third watch and finds such,
blessed are those.

"But know this, that if the master of the house
had known at what hour the thief was coming,
he would not have allowed his house to be broken into.

"You also be ready,
because the human son is coming
in the hour you do not think."
Luke 12:35-40

Jesus said, "Blessed is the man
who knows where the robbers will enter,
so that he may rise and collect himself
and gird his loins before they enter."
Thomas 103

Mary said to Jesus, "Who are your disciples like?"

He said, "They are like little children,
who dwell in a field which is not theirs.
When the owners of the field come,
they will say, 'Leave to us our field.'
They are naked before them
as they leave it to them and give back the field.

"For this reason I say:
If the lord of the house knows the thief is coming,
he will keep awake before he comes
and will not let him break into his house of his sovereignty
to carry off his property.

"And you must watch for the world.
Gird your loins with great power
so that the robbers may not find a way to come to you,
since they will find the lack in your waiting.

"Let there be among you a person of understanding;
when the fruit ripened,
he came quickly with his sickle in his hand reaping.
Whoever has ears to hear let him hear."
Thomas 21

And Peter said, "Lord,
are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?"

And the Lord said,
"Who then is the faithful, sensible manager,
whom the lord will put in charge of his attendants
to give out food allowance at the proper time?

"Blessed is that servant,
whom his lord will find doing so when he comes.
Truly I tell you that
he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

"But if that servant says in his heart,
'My lord is taking a long time to come,'
and starts to beat the boys and girls,
and to eat and drink and get drunk,
the lord of that servant will come
on a day he does not expect
and in an hour he is not aware, and will cut him in two,
and his part he will put with the unfaithful.

"And that servant who is aware of his lord's will
and not ready or not doing according to his will
will be beaten much;
but the one who is not aware,
but doing things deserving of blows,
will be beaten a little.

"And everyone to whom much was given,
much will be demanded from one,
and whomever was entrusted with much,
they will ask the same for much more."
Luke 12:41-48

Jesus said, "I stood in the middle of the world,
and in flesh I appeared to them;
I found them all drunk;
I found no one among them thirsty.
And my soul was afflicted for the children of people,
because they are blind in their hearts and do not see
that empty they have come into the world
and empty they seek to go out of the world again.
Nevertheless now they are drunk.
When they have shaken off their wine,
then they will change their minds."
Thomas 28

"I came to throw fire on the earth,
and I wish it were already kindled.
But I have to be baptized with a baptism,
and how I am absorbed until it be completed.

"Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth?
No, I tell you, but rather division.
For there will be from now on five in one house divided,
three will be divided against two and two against three,
father against son and son against father,
mother against daughter and daughter against the mother,
mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law
and daughter-in-law against the mother-in-law."
Luke 12:49-53

Jesus said, "I have thrown fire upon the world,
and see, I watch over it until it blazes up."
Thomas 10

Jesus said, "Perhaps people think
that I have come to throw peace upon the world,
and they do not know that I have come
to throw division upon the earth, fire, sword, war.

"For there will be five in a house:
there will be three against two and two against three,
the father against the son and the son against the father,
and they will stand as single ones."
Thomas 16

And he also said to the crowds,
"When you see a cloud rising in the west,
immediately you say that a rainstorm is coming,
and so it occurs;
and when a south wind is blowing,
you say that it will be hot, and it occurs.
Hypocrites, you know how to examine
the face of the earth and of heaven,
but do you not know how to examine this time?

"And why do you not judge
even from yourselves what is right?
For as you go with your opponent to a ruler,
work hard to be released from him on the way,
lest he drag you to the judge,
and the judge give you over to the officer,
and the officer throw you into prison.
I tell you, you may not come out from there
until you pay back even the last penny."
Luke 12:54-59

They said to him, "Tell us who you are
so that we may believe in you."

He said to them, "You test the face of heaven and earth,
and you do not recognize who is before you,
and you do not know to test this time."
